Significantly, as President Michael D Higgins enjoyed the first Irish State Visit here in the UK, the foundations were being laid of the brand new Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith.

Here you will find information about our current building project as we construct the brand new Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith, which will house the very finest in Irish Arts, Culture, Economics, Business and Community endeavours. The new purpose built venue will include a performance space, cafe/bar, gallery and a number of multipurpose suites for use as classrooms, dance studios and meeting rooms. We will update this section as soon as possible after news is received.

Breaking News
The site on Blacks Rd is now well populated daily, with a large crane and multiple teams working side by side on the initial ground floor construction. There have been a number of delays over the last few months, pushing the completion date to Winter 2016.

New Reception Area will house a cafe/bar and a small performance space.

New Main Performance Space will have high spec acoustics, sound and projection facilities. It will also have a balcony area offering additional seating.

New multipurpose rooms will be light and bright, and equipped for all uses.

We have been documenting some of the demolition for prosperity, and the images will be used in telling the story of the ICC's rebirth as the new hub for Irish Arts and Culture in the UK!

Recent History

The Board of the Irish Cultural Centre announced this spring that they had successfully finalised the purchase of the freehold of the Blacks Rd site from Hammersmith and Fulham Council. The chairman of the Board Jim O’Hara said, “We can now look forward to the creation of a new purpose built Centre which will allow us to grow and develop our programme of activities and services. Very importantly, we will have a new building in a prime location in central London, which will be held in perpetuity for the benefit of the Irish community in Britain.

Our close partnership with Shepherds Bush Housing Group has enabled us to find a solution, which guarantees the future of the Cultural Centre as well as facilitating the construction of 24 apartment units to be located above the new Centre. It has been a very challenging time for us since the decision to sell the building was made in 2011 but we have been sustained by the level of goodwill and support shown by those who believe in the importance of the Centre’s educational and cultural activities.”

Shepherd’s Bush Housing Group said “We are very pleased to have worked closely with the Council and the ICC on the development. It will provide much needed homes for families in the heart of Hammersmith as well as providing a new lease of life for the ICC which has become instrumental in preserving and celebrating Ireland’s rich heritage.”

Next Steps

We have learned that the expected date of completion has now been adjusted, and are currently being quoted a completion date of no earlier than Winter 2016. We are in discussions at present about this and will update in the Breaking News section as we receive info.
