Adam & Paul – Film Screening

Directed by Lenny Abrahamson Written by Mark O'Halloran (Ireland 2005”) Running time 86mins: This screening will be followed by a Film Club discussion, led by the ICC’s Film Club Curator, Steve Martin.

Friends since they were small boys, Adam and Paul – and we
never learn which is which – have withered into two hapless,
desperate Dublin junkies, tied together by habit and necessity.
A stylized, downbeat comedy, the film follows the pair through a
single day, which, like every other, is entirely devoted to the
business of scrounging and robbing money for drugs. The
difference today is that Adam and Paul – already near rock
bottom – have finally run out of luck, credit and friends.
Directed by one of Ireland’s leading Film Directors, Lenny
Abrahamson; Cast includes Tom Murphy, Mark O’Halloran,
Gavin Dowdall, Luke Keeler Louise Lewis. Two decades on,
from when it was made, Adam & Paul’s stature continues to
grow. In a major Irish Independent poll of critics and film
industry figures last year, (2023) it was voted second best
Irish film ever made.

What the Press say…
“Hauntingly dark and frequently touching, Adam and Paul is
also hilarious.” “ ★★★★ Entertainment.ie

“There are some nods to Beckett and Laurel and Hardy, but
these influences are worn lightly and intelligently, and the
movie never glamorises drugs or tries to make its comedy on
the subject dishonestly flippant” The Guardian.

“This sad, disorientating tale of two chronic junkies looking to
score heroin is one of the best Irish movies ever made.
Written by Mark O’Halloran (who also stars), there is an almost
Beckettian sense of existential alienation about it.
Adam and Paul are meandering through a waste of a life. All
they can think about is getting money and drugs. But this film
works on a higher level, mainly due to the sensitive directing of
Lenny Abrahamson” Irish Independent.

“Screenwriter O’Halloran makes an admirably world-weary
stooge, but Murphy excels as the eager, accident-prone clown”
Empire On Line
