Seán Ó Riada Anniversary Tribute – Film Screening of ‘Mise Éire’.
Seán Ó Riada Tribute (1931 – 1971)
As part of The ICC’s Tribute To Seán Ó Riada, to mark the 50th Anniversary of his death, the ICC presents a special afternoon screening of the acclaimed documentary film ‘Mise Éire’.
The Film ‘Mise Éire’ is a stirring chronicle of Ireland’s history! The Artistic collaboration in the late 1950s to early 1960s between film-maker George Morrison and composer Seán Ó Riorda gave birth to this remarkable feature-length historical documentary, which chronicles Ireland’s struggle to free itself from British colonial rule in the period from1896-1918.
‘Mise Éire’ was the first feature length film ever to be made in the Irish language and since it’s release it has held an iconic status in Irish cultural history and it remains to do so even today. Produced by the pioneering Irish language filmmakers ‘Gael Linn’, Mise Éire draws almost exclusively on the newspapers, newsreels and actual footage from the early years of Ireland’s revolutionary period, to present a history of that turbulent time. It includes original moving footage taken of the momentous events surrounding Easter Week 1916, which, previous to the film being released, had never, been seen before. Upon its release the Director George Morrison was commended for his invaluable salvage work of archival materials, as he’d set out to identify, preserve, save and restore old moving images and photographs in Irish and British collections which otherwise may have be lost and destroyed.
Combining all of these with Seán Ó Riorda’s magnificent and ground-breaking musical score, what evolves is a film of huge brilliance and grandeur, which rightly deserved the phenomenal and rapturous applause, which it received upon it’s release.
The ICC would like to thank Gael Linn for permission to screen this film.
As part of The ICC’s 50th Anniversary Tribute To Seán Ó Riada, we will also be presenting an evening concert featuring four of London’s finest traditional musicians who will celebrate the music and compositions of Ó Riada
