For most of its existence, politics in Northern Ireland was almost exclusively male dominated. However, since the Good Friday Agreement there has been a substantial increase in the number and influence of women politicians there to the extent that currently the leaders of three political parties in the Northern Ireland Assembly are female.

The latest ICC annual conference on politics and society in Northern Ireland since the Good Friday Agreement will hear the personal political journeys of:  Margaret Ritchie (SDLP), Claire Sugden (Independent Unionist), Avila Kilmurray (Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition) , Michelle Gildernew MP (Sinn Féin), Sorcha Eastwood (Alliance Party). 

AVILA KILMURRAY: Founder member of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition and  a member  of the Coalition’s negotiating team for the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Substantial experience of community action, peacebuilding and women’s rights in Northern Ireland
CLAIRE SUGDEN: Independent Unionist member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for East Londonderry. Minister for Justice in Northern Ireland Executive 2016-17.
MARGARET RITCHIE: Former councillor. Former Member and Minister in Northern Ireland Assembly. Former Leader of Social and Democratic Labour Party (SDLP). Former SDLP MP for South Down.
MICHELLE GILDERNEW MP: Sinn Fein MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone 2001-2015 and since 2017. Member of Northern Ireland Assembly for Fermanagh and South Tyrone 1998-2012 and 2016-2017. Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in Northern Ireland Executive 2007-2011.

SORCHA EASTWOOD: Executive member of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland. Candidate for Northern Ireland Assembly and Parliamentary Candidate for West Belfast in 2017 general election.
