Dubliners, James Joyce’s collection of short stories, is his most widely read work. It is deceptively simple. Close study of the stories of the stories uncovers rich layers of meaning and context. In this talk, Donal Manning discusses the collection in general, and he will concentrate on several selected stories to show that close engagement with Dubliners is a deeply rewarding exercise.

Donal Manning
Born in Dublin, Donal studied Medicine at University College Dublin and worked as a paediatrician in Ireland and the UK. He has a long-standing interest in the works of James Joyce. After retiring, Donal completed a PhD at Liverpool University on Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. His book, Finnegans Wake, Ulster and Partition, was published by Cork University Press in 2023. He has taught on Joyce’s fiction at the Department of Continuing Education, Liverpool University.
