hKippers in Concert
The hKippers are a mixed bunch; formed 38 years ago in Stoke Newington, London, by Oscar winning composer Stephen Warbeck ,Pogues’ drummer Andrew Ranken and actor Paul Bradley. They have played many prestigious festivals including The Big Chill , Belfast, Cambridge and headlined concerts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and a sell-out gig at Ronnie Scott’s. Stephen Warbeck has composed music for Translations, The Silver Tassie and The Plough and the Stars at the National Theatre and is a judge on the board of the Irish Film Academy . His second feature film ‘The Man with The Urn’ which he wrote, directed and composed the music for, starring Ciaran Hinds, is currently in post-production. His wife Sarah Homer toured internationally over many years with Gavin Friday and the Man Seezer, as well as performing at The Gate Theatre,Dublin with Marianne Faithful. .The Guardian described their sound as ‘ Music At The fun end of the Cutting edge ‘. They call it Stupid World Music. The nine piece comprises trumpet, clarinets, guitar, flutes, trombone, double bass, accordion, guitar , drums and Bradley ( aka Nigel of EastEnders ) plays a mean sellotape and sings ‘Like a lorry-driver ( according to The Guardian) All songs are original and comprise surreal lyrics with flights of fine musicianship, Recently they headlined the inaugural Rik Mayall Comedy Festival and supported John Otway at his annual convention in Weston Super-Mare. ‘ Don’t be fooled by the wackiness, these musicians are top notch and live are a pure delight ‘
