An Evening with Jan Carson at the ICC Book Club

The Fire Starters (2019)

Starts 7pm

Tickets £8

The ICC Book Club is delighted to welcome Northern Irish writer Jan Carson to read from and discuss her recent critically acclaimed novel The Fire Starters, winner of the European Union Prize for Literature 2019.  Described by the Irish Timesas ‘a hugely engaging novel about the legacy of violence in Belfast’, by Roddy Doyle as ‘gripping, surprising, exhilarating’ and by Donal Ryan as ‘grittily real, wildly magical, insanely alluring’, Carson’s work offers her readers a unique insight into the post-ceasefire, working-class Protestant community of east Belfast.  Set during the marching season in July, The Firefighters is a highly inventive work about fatherhood, sectarianism and the traumatic aftermath of violence, narrated through a compelling blend of social and magical realism.

Jan Carson is based in Belfast. Her other works include a novel Malcolm Orange Disappears(2014), a short story collection Children’s Children (2016), a micro-fiction anthology Postcard Stories (2017), and a number of short stories which have featured in various anthologies and have been aired on BBC Radio 4 and Radio 3. She was winner of Harper’s Bazaar’s short story competition 2015 and shortlisted for the Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Prize in 2016.

Journalist Anne Flaherty is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and holds an MA in Anglo Irish Studies from Queens University, Belfast. Anne has worked for the Irish Press andIrish Timesin Belfast as well as for print and media outlets, including RTE and BBC, in Africa and Asia.
