About the Event

Books Editor of The Irish Times and former Editor of The Irish Post, Martin Doyle has spent more than three decades interviewing writers across Ireland and Britain. In this special ICC event, he will discuss the book, the art of literary conversation, and the changing landscape of Irish writing with journalist Anne Flaherty.

A Hosting brings together 60 interviews conducted between 1991 and 2026, offering readers a unique insight into the creative lives, ideas and influences of some of Ireland’s greatest writers. Featured authors include Sally Rooney, Anne Enright, Claire Keegan, Roddy Doyle, Colm Tóibín, John Banville, Sebastian Barry, Paul Murray, Frank McGuinness and Maeve Binchy.

Martin’s previous ICC appearance for Dirty Linen: The Troubles in My Home Place drew a packed audience and a riveting discussion. We are delighted to welcome him back to the ICC for what promises to be another compelling literary evening.

Reflecting on the collection, Martin Doyle says:

“My new book, A Hosting: Interviews with Irish Writers 1991–2026, draws on 35 years of conversations with authors, many of them published by The Irish Post, which I joined in 1992 and left as Editor in 2001. At least half of the 60 writers featured were born or lived in Britain. Some names might surprise you.”
