with John McSherry and Dónal O’Connor
The magical Irish music trio, Niall Hanna, John McSherry and Donal O’Connor are simply sublime. Niall Hanna is a young Irish traditional singer (and guitarist) from County Tyrone. Having been influenced by his grandfather, the acclaimed singer Geordie Hanna, and Geordie’s sister, Sarah Ann O’Neill – both heavyweights of traditional singing in Ireland – Hanna has followed in their footsteps. His exceptional voice breathes fresh, new life into the traditional songs of Ireland. Winner of ‘The Young Musician’s Platform Award’ from the Arts Council Northern Ireland, Hanna is fast being compared to the great Irish singers, Cathal McConnell, Paddy Tunney, Eithne Ní Uallacháin and Dolores Keane. His first album, ‘Autumn Winds‘ gives genuine insight into Hanna’s own musical passion, whilst also demonstrating his ability to carry his great musical legacy and adding his own upbeat modern twists to great Irish traditional songs.
Joining Hanna for this concert will be the great uileann piper, whistle player and composer John McSherry. Described by Irish Music Magazine as ‘a true master’, McSherry is hailed as one of the finest exponents of the art of uilleann piping in the world today. A founding member of the dynamic Irish trad band ‘Lúnasa’, McSherry also played in Dónal Lunny’s supergroup ‘Coolfin’. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Nanci Griffiths, Sinéad O’Connor, Michael McGoldrick, and The Corrs. He toured with Clannad. His piping has been featured in numerous film and TV soundtracks including Waking Ned. Rounding off this magical Irish music trio is Dónal O’Connor, the great Irish fiddler and music producer, who has inherited a great musical legacy of at least five generations of fiddle playing. So highly regarded, the Irish Times calls him “immaculate, electrifying and a consummate professional.” His recent musical collaborations have included tours with Michael McGoldrick, Capercaillie and Lúnasa, live festival performances with Karan Casey and Solas, as well as recording with Brian Kennedy and Máire Brennan of Clannad.
