Remembering Edna

Join us for a heartfelt evening as we honor the remarkable life and legacy of Edna O’Brien, cherished Patron of the Irish Cultural Centre. This special event will be a tribute to her profound impact on literature and culture, as well as an opportunity for our community to come together in appreciation of her work.

We will be screening our exclusive interview from our 2021 literature festival between our esteemed patron, Edna O’Brien and Dr Maureen O’Connor.

After the screening there will be space to read and reflect in Edna’s work. Whether you have a favourite passage from her works, a personal anecdote, or simply wish to express your admiration, this is your moment to celebrate her brilliance. We invite you to bring your favourite excerpts from Edna O’Brien’s novels, short stories, or essays to read aloud. This shared experience will allow us to delve into the beauty and depth of her writing, fostering a deeper connection with her literary legacy.

Cherry Smyth: One Mountain: Sold

Irish poet, Cherry Smyth, presents One Mountain: Sold, a poetry and music performance of 65 minutes, that responds to a proposed gold mine that threatens to destroy an area of outstanding beauty in the Sperrins, Co. Tyrone.  One Mountain: Sold laments the irrevocable damage caused by unchecked extractivism and vividly portrays resistance by local people.  The piece also examines the relationship between colonial violence and ecological breakdown. She will be accompanied by award-winning Irish vocalist Lauren Kinsella and a soundscape by Dan Nicholls.
