The Irish Language in London/An Ghaeilge i Londain
This event brings together world-leading experts from universities in the US, UK and Ireland to discuss the story of the Irish language in London. The panel will discuss the history of Irish in London from time immemorial to the present day.
Please note that the talks will be in English with ‘cúpla focal’ (a few words of Irish).
Topics will include the Irish migrant experience in London, as well as the city’s role in the Gaelic Revival and its continuing connection to Irish-language literature and culture. Chaired by Dr Eoghan Ahern (Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool), with speakers: Dr Deirdre Nic Mhathúna (Dublin City University, Ireland), Dr Ríona Nic Congáil (University College Dublin) and Professor Brian Ó Conchubhair (University of Notre Dame, USA).

Dr Deirdre Nic Mhathúna, DCU
Dr Deirdre Nic Mhathúna is Assistant Professor of Irish in Dublin City University. Her
research focuses on the work of seventeenth-century poet Piaras Feiritéar and on twentieth- century writers associated with the West Kerry Gaeltacht, including Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Eibhlín Ní Shúilleabháin and Monsignor Pádraig de Brún. She is Secretary of the Irish Studies journal Studia Hibernica and Chairperson of the national association, Cumann Merriman.

Dr Ríona Nic Congáil, UCD
Dr Ríona Nic Congáil is Associate Professor of Modern Irish in University College Dublin and a member of the Young Academy of Ireland. Her research focuses on children’s studies (including history, education and literature), along with women’s history and literature in the Irish language context. She has published many articles and books on these subjects. She was Principal Investigator of a European Research Council Starting Grant (2019-2025) which addressed the preservation of minority and regional European languages in the period since 1900. She has received numerous national and international awards relating to her academic research.

Prof. Brian Ó Conchubhair, University of Notre Dame
Brian Ó Conchubhair is a Professor of Irish Language and Literature at the University of
Notre Dame and a fellow of the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies, the Kellogg
Institute for International Studies, the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, and the Institute for Social Concerns. He has been the recipient of a Joyce Teaching Award (2011) and the Kellogg Undergraduate Mentor of the year award (2024).
He has served as Director of the Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures (2013-2020); Executive Director of the IRISH Seminar (2011-2013), and President of the American Conference for Irish Studies (2015-2017). He has been a Visiting Professor at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3, the University of Notre Dame, Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Charles University (Prague).
Professor Ó Conchubhair’s writings include an award-winning monograph on the intellectual history of the Irish Revival entitled Fin de Siècle na Gaeilge: Darwin, An Athbheochan agus Smaointeoireacht na hEorpa (The Irish Fin de Siècle: Darwin, the Revival and European Thought). He is currently completing a full-length biography of Flann O’Brien/Myles na Gopaleen.

Dr Eoghan Ahern, Institute of Irish Studies (Chair)
Eoghan Ahern is a lecturer in the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool. He is a specialist in early medieval literary and intellectual culture, particularly that of Ireland and Britain. Recent and forthcoming research explores such topics as hagiographical writing, scientific thought, and parodic grammar books in seventh- and eighth-century Ireland.
