16th March

Yeats in Hammersmith

Walking Tour with Niall McDevitt

Starts 12pm

Tickets £10

Meet West Kensington Tube Station

Irish poet Niall McDevitt follows the Yeatsian trail in Hammersmith where WBY lived as a child with his bohemian family, and returned throughout his adult life.

Some of the astonishing West London stories include Yeats’ unsuccessful years of formal schooling, his doomed friendship with the left-wing William Morris, his Thames-side inspiration for ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’ and a magical battle with ‘the wickedest man in the world’ Aleister Crowley.

McDevitt will offer a revisionist and risque ‘national poet’, Pre-Raphaelite/Decadent/Symbolist/Modernist and a consummate Londoner, far from the stock image of Yeats as Dublin theatre manager/nationalist and Sligo poet/folklorist.

Join us for a St Patrick’s weekend special. Meeting Sat 16 March at West Kensington tube. 12pm. £10.
(The walk take approximately two hours and finish at Furnival Gardens. McDevitt will lead interested parties back to Irish Cultural Centre Hammersmith in time for a live screening of the Ireland vs Wales Six Nations Rugby match).
