A high-energy trad blend of accordion and banjo – Gary Curley & Stephen McKee bring their bold “chunky” sound to life with their debut album CHUNKY BUSINESS.

About the Duo

Gary Curley (Co. Fermanagh) and Stephen McKee (Co. Derry) are a dynamic traditional music duo rooted in the sound of Ulster. Their music is defined by strong rhythm, lift, and a distinctive interplay between button accordion and banjo.

Released in 2025, CHUNKY BUSINESS showcases their first collection of original arrangements – confident, playful, and true to their signature style.

Background & Experience

Both musicians come from rich musical traditions and are accomplished multi-instrumentalists. They have performed at festivals across Ireland and internationally, with success at Fleadh Cheoil competitions from junior to senior level.

Their work has featured on TG4, RTÉ, and BBC, reaching audiences worldwide.

Gary Curley

Irish Musician Gary Curley of Chunky Business playing a red accordionFrom Boho, Co. Fermanagh, Gary is an accomplished button accordionist and experienced music tutor. He holds a First-Class Honours Degree in Music from Ulster University and a PGCE in Music Education.

His early musical roots were shaped by family-led sessions at home, his grandmother Kathleen Quinn, and tutor Dinnie Leonard, alongside influences including Finbarr Dwyer, Darren Breslin, and Oliver Deveney.

Gary has worked extensively in music education, including with Music Generation and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, and continues to teach at all levels.

Stephen McKee

Derry, Stephen is a skilled multi-instrumentalist known for his driving rhythm and distinctive banjo style. Raised in a musical family, he developed his playing alongside his siblings.

He studied under Aoibheann Devlin, attended Armagh Pipers Club, and was guided by his sister Lisa and tutor Mark Mohan, with key influences from Adrian McAuliffe and Brian McGrath.

With John McCartin

Guitarist John McCartin (Co. Leitrim), of Garadice and Carlos Sweeney McCartin, joins the duo – bringing powerful accompaniment shaped by work with artists including Frankie Gavin, Sharon Shannon, and bands such as Dervish and Lúnasa.
