May Irish Play Study Group – Juno and the Paycock
This monthly gathering offers an opportunity for fans of Irish theatre in our community to read, enjoy and deliberate the beloved work of some of Ireland’s most iconic playwrights.
Hosted by actress and theatre practitioner, Brigid Shine, the group will tackle a new play each month, selecting scenes to study and read aloud before discussing the play as a while, its language, themes, characters and impact on Irish culture, both in the time it first hit the stage and what it has to offer audiences today.
This months text – Juno and the Paycock by Sean O’Casey
The second of Sean O’Casey’s Dublin plays, Juno and the Paycock tells the story of the Boyle family in the grim slums of Dublin in the early 1920s. Juno, the mother of the family (and the only member who works), desperately tries to hold her family together in the face of adversity and misfortune.

About Brigid Shine:
Brigid Shine is an actress and theatre practitioner, originally from County Armagh. She holds a Bachelor of Education from St. Mary’s University College, Belfast and a Master’s in Musical Theatre from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Brigid has been lucky to play some of Ireland’s most iconic theatres alongside a host of the country’s finest creative teams and artists. Recent credits include: Abigail’s Party (The MAC, Belfast), Kiss Me, Kate (Northern Ireland Opera/Lyric Theatre Belfast); Angela’s Ashes (UK and Éire Tour/Irish Rep Theatre, NYC);The Threepenny Opera (Northern Ireland Opera/Lyric Theatre Belfast); 1932: The People of Gallagher Street (The MAC, Belfast).
Brigid is passionate about the work of Irish playwrights of the past and present, and the transformative power of their plays. She is excited to indulge in some play-reading and lively discussion with the ICC community in the coming months.
