About The Film Horseshoe

All families are mad, not least the Canavans. A drama comedy with a twist set in the wild West of Ireland. When Colm, the head of the family, dies, there are few who mourn his passing, not even his four estranged adult children. But the legalities of his will must be observed, and more than one Canavan sibling is harbouring secrets. As the Canavans return to the family home to the West of Ireland, the fate of the family unit, their sanity and the Canavan estate all hang in the balance.

“Blending free-flowing, sibling banter with moments of affection, comedy, and melancholy, this feature debut from Edwin Mullane and Adam O’Keefe, filmed in the harsh winter landscapes of Sligo and Leitrim, is anchored by powerful performances from, among others, Carolyn Bracken, Lalor Roddy, Jed Murray, and Mary Murray”. Sunniva O’Flynn. Irish Film Institute Dublin.

What the Press Say

“Lalor Roddy has emerged as Irish cinema’s MVP in recent years, grafting a contemplative gravitas to Frank Berry’s ‘Michael, Inside’ and Pat Collins’ ‘That They May Face the Rising Sun’. It feels appropriate that this gifted actor haunts his co-stars in this impressive debut feature… Lalor stamps Colm Canavan, the late abusive patriarch of four warring Sligo siblings, with a bracing cocktail of ferocity and spent sorrow… Horseshoe was a deserving winner of the award for best Irish first feature at Galway Film Fleadh and a fine opening gambit for the film-making duo”.

Tara Brady The Irish Times. ★★★★☆

“Horseshoe is a resoundingly brilliant debut. Bleakly framed by cinematographer Jass Foley, who makes the most of the wild County Sligo landscape, Horseshoe is a hugely entertaining and bittersweet drama about the inescapable bonds of family”. Declan Burke – Irish Examiner. ★★★★☆
