Mise Éire (trailer)

1st January 1970, 12am

A trailer for the classic Irish film ‘Mise Éire’ ‘Mise Éire’ is a stirring chronicle of Ireland’s history! The unique artistic collaboration between film director George Morrison and composer Seán Ó Riada gave birth to this remarkable feature-length historical documentary (released in 1959 and finalised in 1966), to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. Using authentic archive footage of the Rising, ‘Mise Éire’ was the first Irish feature-length film to have an orchestral soundtrack, composed by Ó Riada, which is still highly acclaimed today. ‘Mise Éire’ was also the first feature length film ever to be made in the Irish language and, since its release, has maintained an iconic status in Irish cultural history. Produced by the pioneering Irish language filmmakers ‘Gael Linn’, ‘Mise Éire’ draws almost exclusively on newspapers, newsreels and original footage from the early years of Ireland’s revolutionary period. It includes a combination of old moving images and photographs of the momentous events surrounding Easter Week 1916. The visuals are brought to life by Seán Ó Riada’s ground-breaking musical score, the end result being a striking piece of early Irish cinema that retains a special place within the nation’s cultural imagination.
