This lecture by Jonathan Moore examines the dominant themes of Europe’s first modern guerrilla war with a focus on events in the southern part of the country where the vast majority of the fighting took place. What were the IRA’s tactics in fighting forces far more numerous than they were? How did the British respond to this? How much support did the IRA have in the Irish community? How important was class and gender in deciding this? How significant a figure was Michael Collins? How did they end up with the settlements of 1920 and 1921?
