‘Poetry Day Ireland 2021’ – Martin Dyar

29th April 2021, 12am

To mark ‘Poetry Day – Ireland 2021′ ICC Digital is delighted to bring you a beautiful, powerful and reflective poetry reading from the award winning Irish Poet Martin Dyar. The theme for this year’s Poetry Day is ‘New Directions: Maps and Journeys’ and for this reading Martin has chosen to read three of his poems about three individual musicians, the English folk singer Nic Jones, the Leitrim born singer John O’Reilly and the Mayo minimalist composer Conor Walsh.

Martin says.. “In this selection, I am aiming for links to the main theme, while also hoping to capture something out of three musical lives, that will serve as reflective sustenance in our heavily burdened times”.

In addition to his poetry reading, Martin has also written and shared a special essay, ‘For the Sake of the Song’, which you can read on ICC Digital here.

Martin Dyar is the author of the Pigott Prize shortlisted collection ‘Maiden Names’, published by Arlen House. He won ‘The Patrick Kavanagh Award’ in 2009.  He wrote a song cycle, ‘Buaine na Gaoithe’, with the composer Ryan Molloy, which had an Irish national tour in 2018, performed by the ‘Damselfly Trio’.

Martin has held writing fellowships at the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, at the Washington Ireland Program and at the University of Limerick.  He is also an adjunct professor in the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin and he is the Editor of Vital Signs: Poems About Illness and Healing, which is forthcoming from Poetry Ireland.
