Poetry | Revisiting Death of a Naturalist

Seamus Heaney’s first collection with Faber and Faber, Death of a Naturalist (1966) marked the start of one of the most significant artistic legacies of the 20th and 21st centuries. Winner of the Cholmondeley Award, the Gregory Award, the Somerset Maugham Award, and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, the collection is a sensory exploration of the poet’s agricultural childhood in rural Derry as he attempts to navigate understandings of masculinity, death, and identity.

On this course, poet and playwright Nathaniel Joseph McAuley will guide students through Heaney’s masterpiece, facilitating close analysis of key poems and their contextual significance.
