Anne Gildea – How to Get the Menopause and Enjoy It

Ireland’s acclaimed comedienne Anne Gildea is waxing her moustache, slathering on the Oestrogel and boiling with excitement about bringing her fabulous hit show to the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith.  “How to Get The Menopause and Enjoy It” has been wowing audiences and critics alike, and playing to packed house all over Ireland, since its sell-out launch in 2022.

Anne Gildea launched her new show, ‘How to Get The Menopause and Enjoy It’, on Valentines day 2022 at the Viking Theatre in Clontarf Dublin. The two-week run was quickly extended to a month’s run, due to the huge response and demand for tickets. Anne then went on to play 62 hugely successful dates around Ireland, appearing in 28 venues and entertaining over 10,000 comedy fans.

What is it? Why does it happen? Why is it named after men? Why didn’t our mammies warn us about it? Is there anything you can do about it? And why oh why is so little known about this inevitable phase of lady-life? Anne answers all these Menopause questions and more, as she brings TMP to a whole new level.

Sat 11 November 2023

Doors: 7.30pm; Starts: 8pm

Tickets: £14/16

The show is not only ‘laugh-out-loud entertaining” (!!!), but it’s also informative as Anne brings her keen comedic skills to a topic that affects 51% of the population yet is still treated like a mystery.  As Katy Hayes in The Irish Independent put it, ‘This funny and taboo-busting show blasts the lid right off…Never has the female body been put under such an hilarious microscope…utterly punk.’

On word-of-mouth recommendation this show has gone from strength to strength and consistently sells out large houses. The feedback from audiences has been phenomenal. People are returning, bringing friends and family along.

Here are some of things people are saying about the show….

‘Billy Connolly meets The Vagina Monologues.’

‘I enjoyed it so much I went a second time and brought the husband. He had tears streaming down his face with laughter. And he learned a thing or three. Go everyone when you can. And bring all the men and women in your life too. They’ll love it.’

‘This is the funniest, most honest and real show I have ever been to! Every woman should see it for really good information on menopause and to have genuine belly laughs! … I will go again!’

‘Amazingly funny and really accurate – I loved it!’ – Dr. Deirdre Lundy, menopause specialist.

‘Anne Gildea’s show is one woman genius. Hilarious and educational in equal parts. A must see! I laughed out loud so much my face hurt.’ – Loretta Dignam, Founder, Menopause Hub.

‘This is the funniest show I’ve ever been to, so well researched, I learnt loads; some of it even a bit shocking.” – June Caldwell, writer.

More About Anne Gildea

Anne is a Dublin-based award winning comedienne. Her comedy beginnings began with comedy trio, Doris Karloff, London, ‘89, segueing to stand-up.

After training as an actress at ALRA in London she landed back in Dublin, where she became a co-founder and long-time creative/performer with the comedy group, The Nualas, (1995-2002 & 2011–2019) Ireland’s top shiny-dressed, musical-comedy girl- trio.

Their unique brand of intricately-arranged, self-penned songs and provocative chat about current stuff proved a huge success. The Nualas toured worldwide, most notably playing The Royal Albert Hall, London; an extended seven-week run at The Irish Arts Centre in New York; they did many fab shows (over the years) at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival; plus The Olympia Theatre, Dublin, The Opera Houses in Belfast and Cork, a 64-date tour of the UK in 2001, as well as playing many other major venues across Ireland, Australia and Asia.

International radio and TV appearances included a double-headliner on BBC 1 TV’s Stand-Up Show, BBC’s Edinburgh Nights,
The Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala, Seven Network, Australia, plus Nationwide, on RTE plus also writing and recording several radio series for BBC Radio 4.

As a Solo Artist, Anne was headline performer on 5 ancient Irish TV series: X-it File, X-it Pole, The Gerry Ryan To-Night Show and The Dog’s Dinner. She also featured in comedy-doc The Green, Green Grass of Home, and No Laughing Matter, a documentary which followed her treatment for breast cancer in 2011. She has appeared in other telly shows such as Fr. Ted (Channel Four) and Bridget and Eamon (RTE).

As a stand-up, in addition to live work, Anne head-lined an episode of RTE’s The Liffey Laughs, and guested on The Late, Late Show.

Anne was a featured columnist for seven and a half years with The Irish Mail on Sunday, by-line ‘A wickedly funny take on modern Ireland’, and has also written for other publications including The Irish Times, Examiner, Independent & Irish Post, London.

Anne has published two books, a novel, Deadlines and Dickheads, (O’Brien Press 2006) and a memoir, I’ve got Cancer What’s Your Excuse (Hachette, 2013) inspired by her run-in with breast cancer. The latter inspired the feature film, The Bright Side, which premiered in cinemas in 2021 and is currently available on Amazon Prime.

Her new show is the result of a desire to talk on stage about all things female and middle aged. It has been received with huge enthusiasm. Anne intends to present it to audiences everywhere, until the cows come home.

Whenever Anne gets too big for her britches she phones her Mayo-Mammy in Manchester, who cuts her down to size. Thanks Mammy.
