STANO, the groundbreaking Irish composer and electronic experimentalist, true to the motto of his punk roots to “be original”, now, following screenings all over Dublin, Ireland and New York, finally brings his ‘Masterpiece of Storytelling’ to London
In Between Silence, where we really exist is a collection of intimate personal stories by leading Irish writers and artists including Roddy Doyle, Paula Meehan, Dermot Bolger, Anne Enright, Aidan Gillen, Theo Dorgan all who have a story to tell, presented in a unique film format by groundbreaking Irish composer STANO.
STANO creates a piece of music for each participant. He doesn’t hear the story and the participant doesn’t hear the music until they start to record. His desire is to capture the spontaneous response of each person to the music and the impact it has on their delivery.
STANO’s interest is in rediscovering the power of the shared experience of music and storytelling, of listening, of allowing our imagination to bring us on our own journey while engaging with the voice of the storyteller.
In Between Silence, Where We Really Exist was launched at the International Literature Festival Dublin and made it’s American debut with a three week run in the Barrow Street Theatre NYC. This ongoing collection of now over 100 stories, has since played at festivals throughout Ireland, New York and it will be touring Australia in March 2023.
The ICC is delighted to be presenting the UK Premiere of this extraordinary event.
The collection is housed in the Boole Library, University College Cork alongside the Porcelain Book which accompanies the collection.

“What I’m trying to do is underpin the story with an atmosphere, with a mood, because stories are really visual and my background is in manipulating sound and almost doing a soundtrack to a film that doesn’t exist, that’s really what I’m doing. Its harking back to when we sat around the fire telling stories, the crackle of the fire would have been the soundscape, I’m trying to recreate that feeling”.
