Seán Moylan, Irish Revolutionary

SEAN MOYLAN, IRISH REVOLUTIONARY is one man’s account of key events during the Irish War of Independence. A man who sacrificed, suffered and risked his life for his country. It is a tribute to him and to all who volunteered, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice, and to their families who bear it. In our later years, how do we feel about the actions and decisions of our youth? Did the volunteers have regrets? Feel pride? Shame or guilt? How did they deal with what we would now call PTSD with no network of support?

Written and performed by Michael Patric, (An Cailín Ciúin, Smother, Frontier) and directed by Geoff Gould, the play will take the audience through dramatic events of the period. Ambush and guerrilla tactics, life on the run and the lasting effects of it all. In true Moylan fashion, it will be intense but funny and direct but reflective.

SEÁN MOYLAN IRISH REVOLUTIONARY

“The men who fought the War of Independence were neither adventurers nor professional soldiers to whom revolution was the breath of life, they were men who left their peaceful avocations in a patriotic desire to serve their country, they expected neither reward nor recognition.”

Seán Moylan gave a detailed account of his memory of the War of Independence to the Bureau of Military History which gives us a clear insight into the mind of a revolutionary leader. It is precise, passionate, funny, and painful.

There is an understandable reluctance to talk about the period of time from 1918 to 1923, but after one hundred years shouldn’t we be able to discuss and pass on what is on record?

This play is one man’s account of key events during this period. A man who sacrificed, suffered, and risked his life for his country. It is a tribute to him and to all who volunteered, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice, and to their families who bear it.

An evening sure to entertain, inform and provoke conversation.

“The intensity of this period and the lasting effects of life on the run is well captured in a brilliant play called Seán Moylan, Irish Revolutionary, which I recently saw in Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin. The play, written and performed by the talented actor Michael Patric is a stark reminder of the suffering experienced and the courage shown to bring about our independence and this is something we should never be complacent about.”

– Former Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern
