Library Volunteer Assistant Open Day

Volunteer Open Day for those interested in becoming an ICC Library Assistant only.

Leabharlann ICC – The David Whiteley Library

WE ARE RECRUITING LIBRARY VOLUNTEER ASSISTANTS

As part of our new library development, and in keeping with commitments undertaken as part of our recent and successful cultural funding bids, the ICC is seeking to recruit additional volunteers.

We are looking for enthusiastic people from the community who will enable us to move forward to the next stage in the Library’s re-emergence as an important Irish cultural repository of books and other resources.

We have identified a library management system which will enable us; to organise the Library more efficiently; to make our catalogue more accessible as we move to putting it on the ICC’s website; and to establish practical membership, lending and research arrangements, so that our community can begin to access the valuable resources we have been building up over the past several years.

We value the huge contribution made by all our volunteers in ensuring the growing success of the Irish Cultural Centre, and so it is important that our library volunteers are able to offer the same dedication and skills-set which our existing staff and volunteers exhibit on a daily basis. We hope you will wish to join our team.

The following are just some of the expectations and work skills we would seek to identify in a suitable library assistant;

  1. A neat personal appearance
  2. An attention to accuracy and detail
  3. An enthusiasm for all aspects of Irish culture
  4. An existing knowledge of and ability to contribute in some particular area of Irish culture, be it history, language, film, music, drama, poetry, or literature generally
  5. A willingness to work in co-operation with the ICC’s librarian in pursuing the library development programme being undertaken
  6. A willingness to work with the library membership, members of the public, answer enquiries by telephone, email, or in person, and engage in the practical organisation of the library’s lending system

Specific personal skills will include but not be confined to;

  1. A good general level of education (N.B. No specific level of educational certification is required. No library qualifications required)
  2. A practical working knowledge of ICT, including basic Microsoft and/or Apple software packages
  3. A willingness to learn new ICT systems, including the new LMS software, to ensure the smooth running of our library system
  4. Some familiarity with the Irish language, since a portion of the library consists of Irish language texts (No formal Irish language certification required)
  5. An ability to work independently, without close supervision, and to take the initiative.

If you believe you would be able to support our library work, please come along to our open day on Sunday 23 July at 12pm for an informal discussion about the work of the Library.

Alternatively, please send our Librarian John Byrne an email to: [email protected] and we can provide you with an application form.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS OPEN DAY IS NOT TO VIEW THE LIBRARY. All attendees (and non-attendees) interested in becoming a Library Assistant will need to fill out an application form to apply.
