One of Ireland’s leading actors Frank Grimes performs his riveting portrait of one of the world’s greatest literary figures, James Joyce. With extracts from ‘Finnegans Wake’, ‘The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’, ‘Dubliners’ and ‘Ulysses’, this performance is a superb tribute to the great man and his work and the ICC is thrilled to be presenting it during the 100th anniversary year of his master piece ‘ULYSSES’.
“the he and the she it…”A Portrait of James Joyce, with it’s title taken from a line in Finnegans Wake, is the story of Joyce’s life and about the love between a man and a woman, Joyce and Nora Barnacle. “Grimes’ concern is to illustrate Joyce’s biography with extracts from his novels. So Stephen Dedalus at school, in Portrait of the Artist is taken to represent Joyce at school and Gabriel Conroy’s jealousy at his lover’s deceased ex in The Dead becomes Joyce’s possessive jealousy over his wife Nora Barnacle. Other intriguing titbits tumble forth… it perhaps demands that you actually open the Ulysses that’s been on the shelf all these years impressing visitors, which is no mean feat.” Brian Logan Time Out

ABOUT FRANK GRIMES
Frank Grimes has been an actor for over fifty years. Born in Dublin he trained at the Abbey Theatre and was a member of the Abbey Players for seven years. He scored an early success as Brendan Behan in Borstal Boy at the Abbey in Dublin, Paris and on Broadway, where he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor and was voted ‘Most Promising Actor’ by the New York critics in Variety. Frank has worked extensively in the theatre in London; at the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court and in London’s West End, as well as in Dublin and New York. He also played Father O’Donnell in the original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton’s musical, The Beautiful Game. His many Film and TV credits include: Major Fuller in A Bridge Too Far, Tulips of Haarlem, The Outsider, Britannia Hospital, Crystal Stone, The Wales of August, The Dive, When the Sky Falls, My Son, My Son, Father O’Conner in Strumpet City, for which won the Jacobs Award, Kavanagh QC, Blind Justice for which he was awarded the Silver Nymph for best actor at the Monto Carlo International TV Festival, Mrs Brown’s Boys and Barry in Coronation Street. He has written several plays, including The Fishing Trip, …the he and the she of it and Wake n See, which had a play reading recently at the ICC. He has previously performed his hit one-man show on James Joyce, “…the he and the she of it…” in Dublin, London and Paris as well as here at the ICC, several times.
Frank’s exhilarating performance in “the he and the she of it…” A Portrait of James Joyce, is simply breath taking. Not to be missed! Those of you who saw the show performed at the ICC in 2017 will know what a great homage to James Joyce it is. It’s a real literary feast and a fine example of theatre at its very best.
