Remembering David O’Keeffe – one year on.

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since the sudden and tragic loss of our previous manager, David O’Keeffe. The O’Keeffe family has written this statement below to commemorate the occasion and the difficulty that Covid-19 has presented this year.

‘David's funeral was at Mortlake Crematorium on 6th December last.  It was attended by family members, all of his godchildren, his lifelong friends from Ireland and many friends and colleagues from the world of arts, music and charity.

The Irish Ambassador, Mr. Adrian O’Neill read a personal letter of condolences from the President of Ireland, Mr. Michael D. Higgins. At the Reception afterwards in the Irish Cultural Centre, which was attended by several hundred people, there were warm tributes to David from members of the ICC Board telling how David had contributed to the development of the ICC and the enormous impact that he had made in the 18 months that he served as General Manager. The night showcased Irish talent and culture and featured recordings of David performing some of his favourite songs at charity events.

Charitable donations on the day raised significant sums for David's favoured charities, the ICC itself and Medical Aid for Palestinians.

David's last wish was for his ashes to be scattered off the Cliffs of Moher but sadly this had to be postponed due to lockdown and travel restrictions as a result of the coronavirus.

David, as you will recall, had a great sense of fun and his mischievous giggle is much missed by all of his family, colleagues and friends.

Given the Covid restrictions, we will be meeting ‘virtually’ this year to remember him with much fondness.  David was also a man of passion and commitment and his fund raising efforts for charity were legendary, especially in the context of his heavy work schedule.

We will be remembering him with a lit candle in each of our homes, and, where people are able to, with a contribution to his favourite charities

  • Medical Aid for Palestinians or
  • Irish Cultural Centre Hammersmith

He was a light in the darkness, a warm glow that continues to burn bright among those of us who knew him.’

The ICC are humbled to share with you, a slideshow of David’s time at the ICC as our General Manager. The pictures selected show the breadth of his work with us. Peter Power-Hynes, Chairman of the ICC, quotes on reflection:

‘‘It is hard to fathom that a year has passed since David O’Keeffe left us. The world that he was part of has changed dramatically. I know if he was still with us, he would have approached the challenge with his optimism and drive that made him a fantastic manager. We at the ICC miss him very much but the work our team continues to produce in these trying times builds on his valuable input to the ICC’s history. May he continue to rest in peace.”

We hope you enjoy the images of our late David and will join us tonight in lighting a candle in his memory.
